9th Annual Pawtuxet Village
Scarecrow Contest
October 1-31, 2020The past 2020 months have been difficult ones for everyone dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic and business districts, like Pawtuxet Village, have been especially hit hard. Stores and restaurants temporarily closed for weeks while the state and the country caught its breath. Many opened up for limited hours, and we lost a couple who could not bounce back.
All those involved with Friends of Pawtuxet Village feel strongly that residents, visitors and business owners need to feel a bit of normalcy so to bring a bit of cheer to the Village, we decided to continue our Annual Scarecrow Contest.JOIN US: Community groups, youth groups/schools, libraries and creative individuals! You can participate in the scarecrow contest by adopting one of the historic light poles on Main Street Pawtuxet Village (Broad Street) and creating a scarecrow for display. Best of Show will receive a cash prize!
There are 20 poles available, and it’s first come first serve. You may also speak with one of the business owners about putting a scarecrow in front of their store. To adopt a pole, click on the black Scarecrow Registration button to the left, top.
Some Village businesses will have their scarecrows inside their stores. PUT ON YOUR FACE MASK, don’t be afraid to go inside and take a look, visit with the store owner and #BUYLOCALRI.- ★ You must register with us to participate. Click on the orange “Scarecrow Contest Registration” button above or the black button on the left margin.
- ★ Participants are responsible for providing their own material to decorate their scarecrow.
- ★ To be eligible for votes, all Scarecrow entries must be completed and displayed outside and attached to the historic lanterns/light poles or park signs (not on the wood poles or trees) on Broad Street, Pawtuxet Village the sooner the better to get the most votes. (Recommended date is September 30th).
- ★ Scarecrows must have signage distinguishing the owner or group, and should be prominently displayed and posted on the Scarecrow to ensure proper voting.
- ★ Poles are first come, first serve. Businesses are encouraged to set up the scarecrow in their door front or inside the store to allow community members to use the poles.
- ★ Scarecrows may be subject to severe wind and/or rain so their construction should be durable and with all ornaments securely attached.
- ★ The scarecrows should not obstruct the view of traffic.
- ★ Friends of Pawtuxet Village reserves the right to remove any entries that do not hold up to natural elements.
- ★ Applicants are encouraged to create positive, creative, and nonviolent scarecrows.
